The effects of ecotechnical restoration on the abiotic factors soil, water and air in an agricultural landscape of North West Germany - The assessment of the situation after 6 years

During the 9 years lasting research of the abiotic situation in a restoration-project, a lot of data concerning the quality of soil, groundwater, flowing waters and the microclimate conditions were collected and evaluated. Whereas the research and analysis of the state of the environment is already finished, the environmental monitoring of the situation after restoration is lasting until the end of 1999. Therefore much results of the state situation and some results of the situation after restoration will be shown.
The investigated landscape is dominated by an intensiv agricultural land utilization and therefore by high nutrient loadings in soil, groundwater and flowing waters (ammonia-/ nitrate-nitrogen, ortho-phoshate). The predominantly sandy soils are unable to fix the applicated nutrients, so that the leaching losses are measurable in the upper and lower groundwater layer. The nutrient leaching is well measured during the vegetation period (and moreover) in the groundwater as well as in the flowing waters, because the agricultural soil cultivation goes down to the slopes and the sandy underground is effecting a drainage.
Since the ecological measures are carried out the nutrient loading of the flowing waters and in parts of the groundwater too, is decreasing. Especially in the more than 20 hectare sized nitrification- and denitrification-basin, the results of the nitrogen elimination are marked. Nevertheless the ortho-phoshate elimination is not acceptable. In 1996, one year after ecotechnical restoration, the ortho-phosphate load in the flowing-water, which is the result of the organic and anorganic fertilization outside the recovery sites, lead to a mass algae growth.
