Dr. Torsten Grothmann

Dr. Torsten Grothmann is an environmental psychologist and a senior scientist in the interdisciplinary Ecological Economics Group at the University of Oldenburg.

Research Interests

His current research focuses on social, psychological and methodological aspects of sustainability transformations, particularly of strategies for fostering climate change mitigation and adaptation. His primary research questions are: How can participation and communication strategies to foster climate change mitigation and adaptation be better evaluated regarding their efficacy? How can collective and individual transformative capacities and resilience be measured? In which way should climate change be communicated to motivate mitigation and adaptation behavior? How should participatory processes for supporting climate change mitigation and adaptation be designed?

Curriculum Vitae

Besides his position at the University of Oldenburg Torsten Grothmann works as a freelance researcher and consultant on communication and participation strategies for climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Prior to his current positions he worked for about ten years at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, where he led several research projects on climate change impacts, vulnerabilities and adaptation options in various industrialized, emerging and developing countries.

Torsten Grothmann studied psychology, philosophy and business administration at the University of Bielefeld, the Free University of Berlin and the University of California, Irvine.
