Abstract:  In this article I analyze how changes in environmental conditions may affect the phytoplankton composition in a deep biomass maximum. In particular, I consider the effect on increasing incident light intensity, nutrient loads, turbulent mixing and background turbidity. The outcome of competition can follow counterintuitive rules. For instance, an increase of  light intensity or an increase of the nutrient supply both favor good light competitors.
