Dynamic redox zoning during riverbank filtration (RBF)

View simulation on Google

Reactive transport simulation of the development of redox zones in a riverbank filtration (RBF) system, at Lake Tegel in Berlin. Seasonal temperature changes of the infiltrating lake water impact the location and extent of the oxic (blue), nitrate reducing (green) and managnese reducing (red) redox zones. Degradation of anthropogenic organic contaminants originating from the surface water may depend on its residence time in favorable redox zones. Underground passage of contaminants from the surface water to the drinking water production well are illustrated by small particles transported with the flow field.
